5.0 out of 5 stars A Bargain At The Price, February 9, 2012

This review is from: AquaTop In-Line UV Sterilizer 10W - IL10UV (Misc.)
Given that UV sterilizers can cost in the hundreds of dollars depending on their wattage and quality of construction, one would think that a UV sterilizer costing $40 would appear to be of cheap quality an ineffective.

However, this conclusion would be incorrect in the case of the AquaTop IL 10UV; a 10 watt ultraviolet sterilizer that can be mounted in your aquarium or plumbed into the output tube of your canister or sump filter.

The IL 10UV is not as compact as AquaTop would have one think, given its 15 inch length. Moreover, the barb fitting adaptors included with both the IL 10UV and IL 5UV come in 16mm, 20mm and 24mm sizes; even the smallest of which is too large for canister filters with half inch tubing.

I had originally intended to plumb the IL 10UV into the output tube of my Eheim 2213 canister filter, only to find that the Eheim's 1/2" tubing was too small for even the smallest barb fitting (16mm) included with this uv sterilizer... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars UV Sterilizer, June 14, 2012

This review is from: AquaTop In-Line UV Sterilizer 10W - IL10UV (Misc.)
I have this hooked up to my canister filter in my 55 gallon tank in the output line. Let me clear this up by saying that the sterilizer is pretty dang big. It's around a foot long, so any thoughts that I had of it in my cabinet were dashed. that's not a big problem, though, as I just hooked it up behind the aquarium instead.

There aren't going to be any instructions provided. I know, it sounds pretty simple, but they provide so many parts that I was pretty confused for like 15 minutes while I started at the different ways to hook things up. Maybe I'm just stupid, I don't know, but it would have been nice for AquaTop to provide something more than a shallow informational pamphlet that doesn't tell you how to put the product together. Nevertheless, I figured it out, but up until the point where the sterilizer was hooked up to the aquarium plumbing I wasn't sure if it was going to leak or not because I wasn't sure that I put it together right. Thank god I did, or there would... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Works, but very disappointed with reduction in water flow, June 11, 2012

Straightforward to fit inline, and appears to be good quality construction, but reduced the flow from my Eheim classic to a mere trickle. Switched to using my Magnum 350 filter, and not much better. Finally connected both filters in series and have just about got enough flow. Cleared my bacterial bloom over 3 days, but has caused as many problems as it has solved

5.0 out of 5 stars Aquarium has never looked this good!, November 28, 2011

This review is from: Aquatop UV Sterilizing Pump with UVP9 and 9W UV (Misc.)
Let me tell you something. When I first got this pump, at first I thought, this thing isn't going to clean Jack! Went on for 2 days and seen some improvement, but nothing to much in the way of amazement. By the 5th day my jaw just fell to the ground. I have an 80 gallon tank and let me tell you what, the water is crystal clear. If I have a complaint it's probably that it's a little bulky and is a little loud, but not a deal breaker. Seriously, for $35.00, what do you expect. Hope this helps somebody.

I had two issues with my tank (55gal, goldfish), at first the water turned cloudy white. I've had these fish for years and this has never happened before. I tried several chemical solutions, nothing worked. Then, on top of this, the water started turning green. I knew the green was algae so I thought the UV filter would at least clear that up. When I installed this filter, the water looked like pea soup. Not even four days later the water is crystal clear. This filter solved both my problems. Couldn't recommend it more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product, January 8, 2012

This product made my 36 gallon freshwater tank crystal clear when nothing else would. The product, however is a little noisy. If you place the pump a little lower than the top of the tank it is a lot quieter. Has been working for about three months now without problems. The instructions could be better - it was not clear how low you could place the pump in the tank. Good product; would buy again.

I took a chance on a relatively new vendor and I'm glad I did. Hats off to the Umbrella Group. Everything went smoothly and the product was delivered in good shape and on time.
I'm very pleased with the unit. I needed a UV filter for a smaller tank with a hanging filter (so an in-line wouldn't work) and was very happy to find this at a great price. It's whisper-quiet and includes a power head for great circulation.
Two small words to the wise:
1) The product is a snap to set up if you're a little mechanically inclined because the instructions that come with it leave something to be desired. The illustrations are microscopic and the text says to see illustrations that don't exist.
2) Make sure you look at ALL the photos before you decide to put this in a smaller tank (20 g or less). It takes up more room than the main picture might lead you to believe but is rated up to 50g.
With that said, I would heartily recommend this to anyone who's ever dealt with an... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Control Box failed at 4 weeks, July 29, 2011

I was happy with this unit, seemed like a sane and useful design, however it failed at around 4 weeks of operation. If I am able to get warranty service, or otherwise the issue resolved I'll update this review but right now I can't recommend it.

At 4 weeks or so the control box red light went out which should indicate the UV lamp needed replacing. That's terrible but I wondered if that might not be just a defective light, etc. I just went ahead and purchased a new lamp, figured I'd use it in the long run regardless, however the control box indicator light is still out so that's not it, apparently the 'control box' has failed. I'm attempting to get warranty service from the manufacturer because I'm over the 30 day return policy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!, June 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Green Killing Machine Internal UV Sterilizer with Power Head (Misc.)
Two of my kids tanks turned green while we were away on vacation. I think our neighbors overfed the fish. Anyway, after chasing the algae blooms on the 5 and 10 gallon tanks without success (repeated cleanings and water changes), I purchased the Green Killing Machine. After 48 hours in the pea-soup green 10 gallon tank, the water was noticeably cleaner. After 72 hours, the water was crystal clear. Then I transferred the unit to the 5 gallon tank. After 48 hours, it too is crystal clear.

If you have an algae bloom, this is your ticket.
